1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?
My product is very similar to other magazines in terms of the overall structure, it’s got a cover, table of contents, double-page spread, and many articles. Like many travel magazines, my product includes introductions to various attractions. I challenged conventions by not just showing my audiences well-known travel hotspots, and have them travel there just because it’s popular, but I wanted them to first understand the events that take place within those locations and then have more enjoyment on top of it. In addition, I also included recommendations on areas such as hotels and provided little vacation tips which hopefully can help my readers when they go on vacations. My goal is to provide my readers with enough information which can prepare them for a wonderful journey, a new ‘exploration’. The intended audience for my product can be anyone interested in starting an ‘exploration’. The intention behind my product would be to help release the stress that people gained through everyday life, or to provide some fun to any seemingly long-lasting breaks. The issue that’s being presented by my product is that many people these days, due to various reasons, are unable to step out of their comfort zone to give themselves some new experiences. So it would be nice if my magazine can lead them into taking the first step towards a marvelous trip. 2. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text? My magazine engages with audiences by first creating a relaxing environment. To achieve this, I chose to use many cold colors on both the magazine cover and table of contents. As my readers proceed to the point of the double-page spread, it should then ignite a more passionate feeling in them because I used red as the main color for those pages. I also engage with my audience by providing them with information on the history of certain locations, such as the Forbidden City, as well as giving them travel tips in a very familiar tone, just as if we are friends. I want my readers to be in a very relaxed state of mind when reading my magazine. They should not feel any forcefulness during the process of reading, instead, the descriptions, history, and events within the magazine should be able to lure them into thinking about starting a journey. My product will be mainly distributed in two ways: online websites and bookstores, which allows my audiences to choose the most convenient route according to their preference. To get people to notice my product, advertisements are undoubtedly necessary. This can be achieved by sending out brochures and mails. On top of it, it can offer discounts based on subscriptions, which can further attract more attention. On the other hand, I will also create an official website for my brand, giving my audience a better impression and providing them with a place where they can have a deeper understanding of my product. Online advertisements can then take place on various social media. By clicking on the advertisement, it will take the person directly to my website for the product, making it more convenient if they decided to purchase it on the spot. My product will be separated into the normal version and the special editions. The special edition will include more content on the basis of the normal version, of course, the pricing will increase as well. The time for the distribution is planned to be four times a year, during January, April, July, and October. The theme and contents of each release will be based upon the seasons of each distribution time. 3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project? My production skill developed and improved a lot throughout this project. Using my experience from the mockup anime magazine that I created before, I decided to go with a more clean and fresh design this time. This is even implied in the font of my masthead. I choose to go with a rather thin, straight, and clean font so that it does not give a too childish impression on my readers. The font color is not completely black, but rather a greenish-brown color as I also don’t want my readers to feel too tense on the first look either. The overall color arrangement of the cover is also to match the image of the cover. I made sure the whole layout was able to deliver the relaxing and neath atmosphere that I wanted my readers to experience by lining up the symmetry. I then italicized some parts of the texts, which further softens the formality or seriousness of the font and aligning. I also learned how to better arrange the placement of texts so that no place is too full or too empty. Furthermore, to ensure that the text is not taking the focus of the image, I tried many arrangements of texts in order to find the balance I needed. As I did more research on other travel magazines and layouts, I gained a better understanding of how to express my ideas of the magazine through the creation of the cover. Finally, by adding the barcode, dateline, and priceline, etc., my cover has delivered the message I wanted to send out to my audience. 4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project? In this project, I was introduced to many new software that was able to assist me with completing this project. At first, I was going to use the same method as I did previously on the mockup anime magazine, which is through the apps on my phone. But then I realized the many inconveniences of it, which led me to use Canva instead. I was also later introduced to Adobe InDesign by my teacher, which as well helped me in my creation process. However, I used mainly Canva for the whole creation of my magazine as I thought the operation on it was very easy. There were a variety of tools and elements which granted mostly all my needs. The downloading and uploading procedure in Canva comes in handy as well. The hardware that I mainly used for this project is my laptop, where I completed my magazine cover, table of contents, and double-page spread, almost everything on. I also used my phone from time to time to view my project from a different size and perspective, to ensure that the overall balance is right. Lastly, I used the Internet for many of the researches that I conducted for the project. I used search engines such as Google to help me find the things I needed.
